If you are using Windows Vista, there are two ways to prevent unwanted applications from running right on Windows startup:
    1. Windows Defender
Go to Tools - Software Explorer - Startup Programs - click on unwanted programs and select remove.
    2. Type System Configuration in start menu - Go to startup tab - untick the programs ,you think, hog a lot of resources and they won’t start automatically at the next startup.

Be pretty sure you don’t turn off something crucial to Windows startup or you might land in trouble.
